John Lewis Shopping List 2007
One pair of grey, knee length socks,
Ecover laundry liquid,
a large tub of beeswax polish .
To keep me warm, to salve my conscience,
to fool myself into believing
I am the kind of person who shines.
One blue, wooden-handled dish brush,
one Toshiba laptop .
The plates pile up in the kitchen
while in the living room I discover Spider Solitaire.
A pot of Chanel concealer
to hide behind.
Three pairs
of tights,
cinnamon and ginger body scrub, a pedometer.
I will walk
part of the way home from work each night
and slough
off despondency,
dead skin,
dead ends.
One skein of
grey merino wool (for darning purposes).
I will make
do and mend.
A duck and
goose down pillow
to prop me
up, alone
in bed at night.
