When I first started school a beret was part of our uniform and we were required to wear it at all times when we were outside. Naturally before most children started school they knew about the beret which was pronounced "berrettt" although after a day or two at school, I they realised my their mistake and I was they were completely mortified.
I started knitting this beret the night before I left for Kerry and finished it within a few days although I only got round to sewing it up today. I will need something to keep my ears warm when I venture out again into the wintery weather.
I also managed to do a little bit of housework although mainly because the boilerman was coming and I knew he would have to go into every room and I would be mortified if he had seen how squalourous it was.
We had arranged for him to come today and service all our boilers as TB was working form home and would let him in to each of the flats. In the event I was actually at home and he came up to do my flat last. When he was finished he suddenly asked me what the St Brigid's cross hanging on my kitchen wall symbolised. I explained that it was Irish and made from rushes. He said something like:
"I thought it was something to do with Ulster. I'm sure I've seen it before somewhere." I quickly changed the subject in case this was a ploy to allow him to start talking about Jesus. TB came up for tea tonight and I was telling him about it.
"I wonder where he saw one before."
"I've got one too. He saw it in my cubby hole."
"He must have thought we were weird or religious maniacs."
"He probably thought we were a sect! Three single, middle-aged Irish people in each in our own flat!"
It's time we all got out more.

I tried on my berrettt for TB tonight and he asked me if I was wearing it for a joke.
And did you, right away, whack him with your St. Brigid's cross?
I love knitting. Hate stitching up the seams, so solutio: Knit whatever it is on circular needles. I'm sure you could do a berrettt that way!

I'm sure I could. I am very bad at sewing things up and always underestimate how long it takes to do.
