Single Observation - Week 2
Here is my mass observation diary for last week. In the spirit of the original I have included something on what people are saying on current affairs and have tried to reflect the zeitgeist as best I can.
Monday passed in a blur. I left work late and when I got to the station I was dismayed to find that it was closed. The underground employee who was turning us away had not completed his customer care training so could not give any advice on alternative routes. We passengers were forced to speak to each other and in some instances, give advice. It was just like the spirit of the blitz or Northern Ireland.
Tuesday started with me disposing of another corpse – a mouse not a person. This time not decapitated.
Bitter disappointment on Wednesday when I arrived at my evening class and discovered that the teacher was off sick. The substitute teacher was unaware of my special talents and did not single me out for any special attention. Of course he was an American which could explain it. I read my haiku aloud to the class and they were all speechless - with admiration I suppose.
On Thursday I went to an interview for a new position. After the interview I was given some instant feedback. My friends are always saying to me how come you are so modest when you have so many talents (as well as being as beautiful as the day) so not surprisingly the feedback from the interviewer was that I should promote myself more.
In the evening I spoke to Traybake and he said “....and as for Tony Blair being peace envoy to the Middle East! Don’t make me laugh! It’s a wonder they don’t make Myra Hindley children’s czar while they’re at it!” I had to explain to TB that this would not be possible as Myra Hindley is dead.
On Friday TB, London Sister and Mr London Sister and myself went to see Akram Khan at Sadler's Wells. We did not see any famous people which was rather disappointing.
On Saturday I got the battery on my watch changed in a shop in Chapel Market. There was an Australian girl in the shop bantering with the lady shop keeper who was a Cockney and it occurred to me that Australians and Cockneys have much in common – like accents and criminality.
On Sunday I went for a walk with my friend F. who is very talkative unlike myself who prefers only to say something when it is insightful and worth listening to. It was a beautiful autumn day. The trees were decked out in all their coloured autumn coated mellowness and the white frost was sparkling on each individual blade of grass like sparkling white diamonds. I did not mention that I had noticed this to F. as she is not literary or sensitive like me. In the evening I curled up on the sofa with a good piece of darning. I am never happier than when getting on with a bit of mending.
What were you darning? Tea towels? Interlock knickers?
